Al instalar java 7 update 45/55 error nullpointerexception

Hola.
Tengo un equipo con Windows xp sp3 e IE 8. Resulta que instalo cualquier versión de java 7 update 45 y update 55 antes de nada compruebo que no hay ninguna otra versión instalada y al instalarlo y abrirse la pagina de java para verificar que esta correctamente instalado muestra el error de nullpointerexception.
Incluso he probado con la versión 6 update 31 y el error es este:
excepción: JNLP file error: JavaDetection_applet.jnlp. Please make sure the file exists and check if "codebase" and "href" in the JNLP file are correct..
